Alcoholic Anonymous/Narcotics Anonymous (AA/NA)
Classes are open to all offenders who report a problem with alcohol/or drug abuse, have a documented history of abuse, and/or express a desire to participate in the program. Northpoint Training Center has two AA/NA classes that meet weekly.
AODA
Life Without a Crutch Program provides a pre-treatment orientation to recovery from dependency of all types. Its primary goal is to encourage the inmate to assess his addictive behaviors honestly. This program is designed as adult education on a group level and is not intended as therapy.
Pre-Release
This program is designed to present the inmates with information necessary to help them make a smooth reentry into society. Classes cover parole responsibilities, how to get a job, health issues, preventing AIDS and other infectious diseases, parenting, as well as programs and services available in the community.
Spanish to English
This program is sponsored in cooperation with the Centre College Volunteer Program and taught by Centre College students. It is designed to help the Hispanic inmate have a better understanding of English to assist them in adapting to the institution and the community.
Northpoint Jaycees
This is an international service organization that is open to all young men between the ages of 21—35. It’s purpose is to help them develop organizational and leadership skills. They must also believe in giving of themselves to the community and to their country. Northpoint’s Jaycees, through fundraising activities has a longstanding tradition of sponsoring Christmas banquets for senior citizens in two of the surrounding counties.
Positive Mental Attitude (PMA)
This program is based upon the 17 principles of success presented by the Napoleon Hill Foundation and designed to be taught by two inmates under staff supervision. The program is conducted over an eight-week period on Tuesdays and Thursdays 9:00 a.m. to 10:30 a.m.
Northpoint Veterans Club
The focus of the Veterans Club is to assist inmate veterans with their military affairs and to give them an opportunity to assist other veterans in need. The club sponsors a yearly banquet for outpatient residents of the VA Medical Center Recreation Department.
Do the Right Thing Program
This program is designed to educate young high school students on the workings of the Criminal Justice System in a prison environment. It is not designed to scare but to provide factual information that may deter them from future criminal activity.
Adult Basic Education
This program is designed to assist inmates as they improve basic skills in reading, writing and math. They may earn a GED, which prepares them for success in the work place. Both day and night classes are offered.
Technical Programs
The objectives of these programs are to provide comprehensive technical education, which prepares the individual for successful reintegration into society. Technical programs provide a related studies academic program to technical students deficient in reading, math, or language. Programs offered are Masonry, Electricity, Small Engine Repair, and Carpentry. Vocational Carpentry is partnering with Habitat for Humanity in preparing housing components, which consists of wall units, trusses and cabinets.
College Program
This program is provided through KCTCS and taught by a qualified instructor approved through KCTCS. Classes are held on Tuesday and Thursday evenings from 6:00 to 9:00 p.m.
Correctional Industries
The purpose of Correctional Industries is to reduce the taxpayers burden for maintaining the prison system by utilizing inmate labor to produce and perform services that are a benefit to the Commonwealth and provide a realistic work experience and marketable skills which will improve the inmates’ chances for securing gainful employment upon release.
Recreation
The institutional recreation program offers a variety of activities to include intramural sports, varsity athletics, bands, fitness services and individual programs. Recreation staff also supervise the barbershop.
Institutional Religious Center (IRC)
The IRC provides a full calendar of religious programming for the inmates at Northpoint Training Center. With one full-time Chaplain, the Religious Center welcomes a number of volunteer chaplains to conduct services and provide counseling as needed.
